Hipster Tulum

Tulum takes 'hipster' to another level. It might be too hot to sport beards here, but this place would grind Shoreditch to the dust in shame. Yoga places, overpriced vegan eating spots, mystic symbols, tourists cycling past shops selling fetishised dreamcatchers, I couldn't quite decide how I felt about it.

While driving we also accidentally stumbled into the village part of Tulum, which made me realise we had only seen its tourist-advert veneer, hiding the poverty and mundane every day life that didn't sell as well in international promos.

Nevertheless, there is something compelling about the place. Tulum is a window to the Caribbean, and that sexy, tropical wind rushes in on the wings of shrieking and swooping pelicans. The sun shines off the sea and bears down on you, forcing you towards the water. It's all about the water.

If places like Merida treated us to Mexican food made with love, Tulum provoked us into trying food made with a young audience in mind.

We started our day with breakfast on the strip of road where the hotels were, and decided we liked the look of Zamas, a place with colourful tables and a great view onto the ocean.

We wouldn't be hipsters without quinoa.

Or crafty coffee which, for all we know, came in a Ricoffee jar...

Or avocados.

The start of an excellent stop in Tulum. Let the picture-taking begin.
