The queen's city, Obidos

After an invigorating morning spent catching the waves, I spent the latter part of the day soaking in history and culture (and alcohol). First, the small fishing town of Peniche offered us magnificent views of cliffs and rock formations dating back to the Jurassic period - dinosaur fossils were found in this part of Portugal.

Hair tangled by the wild wind, we marvelled at the history of the place, before making our way to another special place, Obidos: a small medieval town, complete with winding cobblestone streets.

The city is also known as the Town of the Queens, owing to the fact that the erstwhile Queens of Portugal used it as their residence since the 13th century. The place brought together diverse influences and architecture, including from Moorish and Vizigoth invasions.

You can climb up the ramparts circling the city and get a unique view from up there...

... Or you could head straight for ginja: the local cherry liqueur, which you drink from a chocolate cup. Rich and syrupy, yet tart from the cherries, it goes perfectly well with the bitter chocolate and warms you up instantly.

Obidos also produces some incredible bakery, my favourite being a heavy, spicy brioche.

The streets are lined with souvenir stores, the occasional hipster shop, and little gates and nooks and crannies which make for a camera addict's paradise.

Even in winter, you can appreciate the bursts of colour popping everywhere.

As night fell, we bid goodbye to this pretty little town, amazed by how it packs a punch, and, exhausted by our surfing adventures of the morning, made our way back to Lisbon.
