The Queen's London
There will come a day when my friends, and the strangers on the street, will learn to take flattering pictures of me, as I do to them. But that moment was not this weekend, where the pictures yet again didn't match the agony I went through in choosing the correct outfit and surviving on vertiginous heels.
The rationale behind this sartorial suffering?
Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II.
London blessed us with glorious sunshine, bursts of blooming flowers and some pretty epic events this weekend. It's almost as if Her Majesty the Queen had called in the best weather possible for her Birthday...
Which I, together with other Queen's Young Leaders, celebrated in grandiose style at the Royal Albert Hall, at a star-studded concert. I'm ashamed to say that my knowledge of pop culture was very limited... so I didn't recognise most of the singers. It was certainly more fun to look at Her Majesty enjoying Shaggy and Craig David from her balcony.
(I didn't realise Theresa May was sat in the balcony right behind me...)
But the highlight of the event was the seeing the Mauritian flag: apparently the Women's Institute will be making a corgi-themed birthday cake for Her Majesty...using Fairtrade sugar from Mauritius! (you can see the little flag at 00.12 into the video here, just saying.)
Another highlight was seeing Prince Harry rock up on the stage to announce that the Queen's Commonwealth Trust had been launched to support young people across the Commonwealth.
This weather also called for al fresco drinking. (Chilled pink Prosecco and red velvet cheesecake, need I say more?)
Outrageous sunglasses to match the outrageous earrings, because YOLO.
More flowers with coffee in Fulham (apparently this place, Megan's, is a 'cash-free' place to do their bit for the environment...but they still print receipts and use plastic straws. Dafuq?)
Smiles all around to catch up with friends, including a tour of the swanky Facebook office, although Facebook doesn't need me to scribble on a wall - a real one - to know what's on my mind.
Given that this weekend was also a celebration of all things glorious and British, from Her Majesty the Queen's birthday, to the Commonwealth Summit, to the London Marathon, it had to be topped off with high tea at that glorious British institution, Fortnum and Mason's (I personally prefer the rather more irreverent décor at Sketch).
With its perfect mix of glamour, sunshine, friendship and quintessential British quirks, this weekend brought with it the promise of a beautiful summer to come.
